Room to Operate
To secure a vehicle onto a flatbed tow truck, the truck operator must pull a couple of car lengths ahead of it. This will allow for enough clearance for proper alignment of the vehicle being loaded onto the bed. It also provides enough room to lower the tow bed so that it can be used as a loading ramp for the vehicle.
Hooking Up Properly
There are usually two slots on the bumper of most models of vehicles, and these are located at the front and bottom. They are designed by the manufacturer specifically for towing. Using the two hooks at the end of the winch, the tow truck operator will connect hooks to the car or truck in those slots.
Depending on the make of the vehicle, these slots will vary. If you have a Ford or Chevy vehicle, there is a hole on each side of the frame for winch hooks. Almost all Japanese cars have their tie-down slots under the front bumper.
